After you’ve sent out dozens of applications, landing an interview can send even the calmest person into a tizzy. This short process can determine so much of your future that it’s impossible not to stress out a little bit.

However, there are plenty of things you can do to make the day of your interview go more smoothly. By preparing for everything you know you’ll need to do, you can give your full attention to nailing the interview.

1. Prepare your outfit.

A little preparation the night before can save you stress and headaches the day of the interview. Don’t just decide on what to wear, actually prepare your clothes.

That means making sure everything is ironed, free of pet hair, and looks great. You may think you have time for all of this in the morning, but when one thing goes wrong, it can start a cascading effect. Limit the variables by taking care of this necessity well in advance.

2. Learn the route to your interview.

We recommend actually driving to the location beforehand. This does more than simply help you learn how to get there. It will also calm your nerves as you arrive on the day of the interview since you’ve been there before.

Don’t forget to figure out exactly which building and room you’re heading to. Putting an address into Google Maps might just take you to a complex of buildings. Knowing exactly where to go will keep you stress-free as you head to the interview.

3. Print out your resume and a list of important names.

Printing out resumes may seem unnecessary, but even if your interviewers already have a copy, you’ll look like a pro for taking this step. You also need to have a resume for yourself. Even though you know your own employment history, your interviewers may have a  very specific question based on the wording of your resume.

Making a list of the people who will be interviewing you will help you seem sharp the day of the interview. By memorizing the important names, you won’t have to think as much about these details when you’re actually meeting the people.

4. Prepare for common interview questions.

You can easily find lists of common interview questions and practice answering them. Try not to memorize answers, but instead come up with strategies that work for many variations of questions.

Also, come up with industry-specific questions that general websites don’t address. Most of all you should practice being comfortable coming up with answers in a reasonable amount of time. Interviewers won’t expect you to have an immediate answer to every question. They may even be more impressed to see you take a moment and think before answering.

5. Prepare your breakfast and get a good night’s sleep.

After you’ve prepared your mind, don’t forget to prepare your body. That means getting a full night’s sleep. Do whatever you need to do to ensure this. Avoid caffeine, exercise earlier in the day and get everything done at a reasonable hour.

Once you’ve made all of these preparations, relax and be yourself. Potential employers love to see someone who’s comfortable and anxiety-free during this sometimes stressful process.
