“13 Reasons Why” is pretty much everyone’s favorite obsession. The Netflix show follows a group of high schoolers and adults after a student commits suicide. It’s become yet another binge-worthy show from Netflix.
The series was based on a novel written by Jay Asher. It was originally going to be a movie starring Selena Gomez, but it was eventually adapted as a series for Netflix. This was probably a wise decision, because it’s getting a ton of positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.
The shows has left people talking about many of the characters, but especially about the fate of Alex. Obviously, if you don’t want season one spoiled for you, should turn back right now because this contains some major spoilers.
The last we see of Alex, of course, he is in critical condition after a self-inflicted gunshot wound. But some viewers don’t necessarily buy that. They think that he hadn’t shot himself but was instead shot by someone else to make it look like a suicide attempt.
The theory actually has some pretty solid evidence. We were a bit skeptical at first, but after examining the show a bit more closely, we think there actually might be something to it.
Many are speculating that Tyler actually shot Alex and then made it look like a suicide attempt. The first piece of evidence is that we see Tyler has built up a bit of an arsenal of weapons near the end of season one. He certainly had the weapons to shoot Alex, if it indeed was him.
Also, at the end of the season, we see Tyler staring at pictures he’s taken of all the main characters. The one photo he pulls down is Alex’s photo. Are the writers trying to tell us something about Tyler’s feelings towards Alex?
Of course, the show also made it look like Alex was depressed and was capable of taking his own life. It’s entirely possible that this was a suicide attempt and the “Tyler shoots Alex” theories are completely unfounded.
Alex was really depressed about Hannah’s death and he seemed to take it the hardest (except maybe for Clay). He also exhibited some signs that he may be suicidal based on his behavior on the show.
Aside from that depression, there are other specific behaviors viewers say are indiciative of suicidal thoughts. First, he swings from apathy to rage (like when he fight Montgomery in the parking lot). Next, he shows a real disregard for his own safety when he’s driving after he, Justin, and Zack kidnap Clay.
There are also parallels between Hannah and Alex. For instance, he’s shown falling into a pool early in the season, and Hannah kills herself in a bathtub in the final episode. As one final nod to suicide, Alex cleans his room before he apparently shoots himself. Many people who commit suicide clean their room and tie up other loose ends before they attempt suicide.
Whether it was suicide or he was shot, we’re excited to see what happens in season two. While Netflix hasn’t announced anything yet, we’re confident we’ll get another season that answers all of our questions.
