At 17 years old, Austin Shifflett of Charlottesville, Virginia, decided he was going to weigh himself. He was shocked when the scale said he weighed 324 pounds. Austin had assumed he weighed about 250 pounds.

Desperate to lose weight and become healthier, Austin asked his grandmother for help. She had previously lost weight using the Atkins Diet, so he decided to give it a try as well.

In addition to the low carb diet, Austin started going to the gym regularly and stopped eating junk food.

His results were incredible: In the first three months he lost a remarkable 80 pounds! Initially he was a little shy. “‘I started going to the gym late at night when no one would be there to see me,” he said. “It took ten months to lose 156 pounds.”

A side-effect of Austin’s weight loss is that his confidence has never been higher. “It changed my life in a lot of ways. I was really shy before so it has helped with my confidence levels,” he said. “It’s really helped with dating and girls too.”

Now 22-year-old Austin no longer deals with bullies teasing him about his weight, but he still has a ways to go.

He has started a GoFundMe page to raise money to have surgery to remove his excess skin. Regardless of whether he raises the money for the surgery, Austin is determined to help other people get healthier, just like he has.
