Are they or aren’t they? That’s the main question when it comes to YouTubers Eva Gutowski (MyLifeAsEva) and Brent Rivera. The two have been close friends for years, but when they posted some particularly cozy pics from Coachella back in April, the internet went crazy.

Piggy back rides, hand holding, kisses on cheeks—Eva’s Coachella post sure made it seem like they were a couple to us.

Brent posted a cute photo from the festival as well, which he captioned, “Coachella with Eva,” along with a heart emoji.

Coachella with Eva ❤️

Less than a month later, the former Vine star posted an Instagram video where the two shared a steamy kiss after insisting that they’re just friends. Could they be any more confusing?

Giving even more fuel to the Breva rumors, Brent also shared a side-by-side picture of himself kissing Eva on the cheek at Disneyland on July 6, 2019, alongside a photo from the exact same stop four years before.

Okay, pack it up, case closed—they’re totally an item, right?

Rocky Roads

Hold on, we can’t confirm #Breva just yet. After years of heartbreak, jealousy, and flirting, it seems the truth about their relationship is more complicated than we thought.

The speculation as to whether Eva and Brent are more than friends goes back almost to when they met. Last year, Eva revealed in a tell-all YouTube video that despite their flirting, they were not a couple. She told her viewers that although she did have a major crush on Brent for a long time, he didn’t feel the same way. And she even accused Brent of leading her on.

But, nearly a year later in February of 2019, Brent admitted in a YouTube video of his own that he actually did start to develop feelings for Eva. He even revealed that they gave their relationship a try once and for all, only to break up a few weeks later when Eva was caught flirting with another guy!

Timeline

The timeline can be pretty hard to make sense of, and there seems to be a lot of gray area, but there are a few things we know for sure. They met in 2015 on the set of Eva’s music video for “Literally My Life” after Eva asked Brent to be in the music video—although they both claim they didn’t know who the other was at the time.

Brent admitted that there was an initial attraction and he thought Eva was “super cute.” About a week after filming the video, Eva was dropping Brent off at his house, and he invited her in for a “house tour” (definitely code for “he wanted to kiss her”). They both admitted it was a little awkward, but as Eva was leaving, they shared a moment—Eva thought they were about to kiss, but Brent got nervous and gave her a hug instead. Yikes!

Shawmila vs Breva.. 😱😂 (Señorita parody is out now on my YouTube❤️)

A few days later, the couple found themselves alone again, outside looking at the stars. Brent described it as “romantic, something you’d see in a movie.” But once again, Brent got nervous and didn’t kiss her. After Eva left that night, Brent was regretting not kissing her and texted her, “I should’ve kissed you.”

Eva’s video from 2018 tells the story a little differently, but the main details are there: They were hanging out at his house, they came close to kissing but didn’t, and he later texted her expressing his regret.

The pair went back and forth like this for about a month, and Brent admitted that he didn’t want to date her because he was worried about ruining their friendship. Meanwhile, Eva started dating influencer Alex Hayes.

“I feel like I lost my chance and like I regretted not making a move when I could. Like to me on Instagram and YouTube it looked like they were in love and like they were having such a good time together,” Brent confessed.

According to Eva, Brent was totally jealous and was pretty petty toward Alex.

“When we filmed the ‘If My Life Was an Emotional Teen Movie’ video, I was at the time dating Alex. Brent gets in the car—you didn’t get shotgun,” she told Brent in her tell-all video. “You sat in the back seat of my car, and then the whole time we were driving to the park, every time you would say something, I would look in the rearview mirror and you would be death staring at me and him. Any time anything would come out of his mouth, you looked at me like, ‘Why are you with this person?’”

Although he didn’t seem supportive of the relationship, Brent was certainly supportive of Eva. At one point, she called him at 1 a.m. crying to vent about her relationship with Alex. Brent comforted her and told her that he was there for her. Shortly after that phone call, Eva and Alex broke up.

Eva tweeted out her feelings about the breakup, alleging that Alex used her just to get followers and fame. With Alex out of Eva’s life, Brent felt like he might have another chance.

However, Brent wasn’t sure if Eva was completely over her ex and started to flaunt other girls in front of her. Long story short, Eva got mad, Brent got upset, and they both agreed they weren’t ready for a relationship, although they knew they were more than friends.

“I know that I led you on, and I know that it was my fault that you were crying. And that’s why I felt bad because you were my friend,” Brent explained in a YouTube video to Eva. “You never want to see your friend cry, and when it’s because of you that hurts even more.”

The couple tried to make it work and even went on a romantic trip to Disneyland.

“At this point, things were going great,” Brent said. “I actually started really falling a little bit for Eva. …Things were actually happening between us.”

“But then, she went on this trip and she stayed at this guy’s house,” Brent told his viewers. “It was just her friend, and now I understand what happened, but she was posting a bunch of stories and pictures with these guys, and I felt like I had opened up lately, so when I saw that I was getting jealous.”

Brent blocked Eva on Instagram (whoa!) and to retaliate, Brent sent some Snapchats of him being flirty with other girls.

After that, things fizzled about between the couple and Breva was no more.

However, the two remained best friends and continued making videos together, and all hope was not lost for Breva shippers. In a video posted in July of 2019, they rekindled their romance, but there was a catch—the YouTubers only dated for a day.

“Eva and I have been really, really close friends for a really long time. I’ve known her for like six years,” Brent explained in the video. “But today, I wanted to switch it up and see what it would be like to date Eva for an entire 24 hours.”

They went on a picnic, shopped at the mall (where Brent told Eva she could pick out anything she wanted and he’d buy it for her), and explored Disneyland, all while holding hands, cuddling, and even kissing a few times! Although the whole “date” was probably just for the vlog, we still liked seeing them as a couple.

Two months later, and Brent and Eva still aren’t officially dating. However, according to Eva, they are still “more than friends.”

Love you so matcha! 😂🍵🍁🍂

“I think we’re just such good friends and trust each other so much,” Eva told ET in July. “…He’s always felt, to me, more like a hometown friend that I’ve had since I was a kid than like someone I met on social media. So I think we just don’t want to ruin that.”

Sounds like a pretty solid shutdown of the rumors that the two are anything more than friends. However, Eva went on to give some hope to Breva shippers.

“So it’s kind of like this weird blurry line between like friends—and we love to create content with each other, so that’s gonna come naturally,” she said. “And then, I don’t know, just down the road maybe we’ll get together, but there’s no point now. We’re just having so much fun doing what we’re doing.”

Eva’s comments definitely left enough room for Breva rumors to stay alive, and neither Brent nor Eva seem to mind. They majorly stoked the gossip when they released a parody of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s music video for “Señorita” in August 2019. It’s…really something. You just have to see it for yourself.

Based on the steamy scenes and full-on makeout session, many fans still aren’t convinced that the pair are “just friends,” as they claim in the video.

We can’t definitively answer the “are they or aren’t they” question—as far as we can tell, they’re somewhere in between, and they seem to enjoy keeping us guessing. Either way, we love how close they are, and we’re looking forward to more content from the pair in the future.
