A unexpected companion
There’s something to be said about company during our darkest hour. When White Boy, a pit bull, found himself trapped in the Hillsborough River in Tampa, Florida, he was certainly in his darkest hour. He had been in the water for some time and could not find his way over or around the tall concrete wall that blocked his path. That’s when an unlikely friend showed up to lend its own support: a manatee!
Free at last
The manatee, a species known for their curiosity, had been drawn to the pup’s struggles. It waited by the frightened dog until after rescuers climbed into the river to hoist White Boy out of his watery prison. Tampa police said, “His manatee kept our scared, wet pup company until TPD Marine Patrol could complete the rescue. You don’t see that every day, and it’s a great reminder [of] the importance of kindness.”
The heroes of the hour
The pup was definitely happy to be out of those waters and he had his Tampa Police rescuers to thank for that. But it must have also been comforting to have a manatee watching over him. Probably the best comparison would be a drowning crow saved by an unlikely hero, a bear!
Back together again
White Boy was reunited with his family, who were overjoyed at having him back safely. They were so grateful to their dog’s rescuers for getting their beloved pet home. They were also thankful to White Boy’s marine companion for its support during such a tough time.
