Everyone probably has salt in their kitchen, but not everyone knows how many uses it has in the home. From cleaning up nasty messes to unclogging drains to even possibly saving lives, salt can work wonders.

These are just a few salt hacks that can make your life so much easier:

1. Unclog Drains

If your shower or sink drain is clogged, there’s no need to buy expensive drain cleaner when cheap household items can work just as well. Just mix together one-fourth cup of baking soda and one-fourth cup of salt and pour it directly into the drain.

Next, pour about a half a cup of vinegar down the drain, let it sit for 15 minutes, then pour hot water down the drain to flush everything out. Your drain will be squeaky clean!

2. Clean Up Messy Egg Yolk

Eggs can be difficult to clean up and always seem to leave a sticky residue behind, but salt can fix that. Simply pour a generous amount of salt over the mess and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. It will be much easier to wipe it up with a paper towel.

3. Clean Greasy Pots and Pans

If your pots and pans have stuck-on grease stains that seem impossible to completely clean, there’s a hack for that. Sprinkle salt over the grease, then add water. After about 10 minutes, you’ll be able to wipe away the stains with ease.

4. Clean Dirty Sponges

If your sponges are also covered in grease stains (probably after trying to clean greasy pots and pans) you can also clean them with salt. Mix about one-fourth cup of salt with two cups of water, then leave the sponge in the mixture overnight. The next morning you’ll find that the stains are completely gone.

5. Put Out a Grease Fire

Not only will salt help you clean everyday messes, it can also save your life. If a grease fire starts while you’re cooking, grab the salt. Douse the fire with a generous amount of salt, which will cut off the oxygen and cause the fire to die down quickly.

6. Clean Your Iron of Sticky Messes

If your iron has leftover residue after something melted on it, you can clean it up with a little bit of salt. Turn your iron on high and put down a piece of wax paper. Cover the paper with a thick layer of salt and run your hot iron over the salt for about a minute. It will look good as new!

7. Clean Tough Shower Stains

Sometimes even commercial cleaners can’t clean tough shower stains, but this DIY solution will have your shower sparkling. First, make sure you’re wearing safety gloves and have a window open for proper ventilation. Then, mix a cup of salt with a cup of turpentine. Stir the mixture well, then scoop it onto a sponge and scrub the shower stains away.
