What seems like an ordinary day turns into something amazing! A group of people on a speed boat are surprised when they see a killer whale, or orca, emerge out of the water. This is incredible because killer whales are rarely seen in the wild. There isn’t one, but several orcas, which isn’t surprising because killer whales are extremely social animals. The killer whales are following their speed boat, which they find exciting, but also a bit scary. They are, of course, among the largest marine mammals.

Killer whales have some of the most complex societies in the animal kingdom. Elephants and humans are the only other animals that have comparable social structures. Because of their complex social systems, marine experts find their captive situations troubling. The film “Blackfish” exposed some of the controversy surrounding killers whales in captivity at places like SeaWorld. Killer whales travel in clans of four to six and are led by the oldest female, known as the matriarch. They never individually separate from each other, with the exception of mating. Clans often form communities with other clans. Through underwater sound, they communicate using three different vocalizations: clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls. Clans can have different dialects, which is pretty amazing.Killer whales are considered one of the most intelligent animals on earth. They can easily mimic other whales and are quick learners, which is why companies like SeaWorld use them entertain crowds. The people on that speedboat are truly lucky. They got to see one of the greatest animals on earth in its natural environment.
