Brittany Hilton and her husband, Steven, are both police officers in the Bridge City, Texas, area, and her plea for peace on social media has garnered support from thousands of people across the country.

In a Facebook post, Brittany wrote that the photo may look like just two police officers smiling for the camera.

“But there is more,” she continued. “We are husband and wife, parents to four beautiful girls, we are a son and a daughter, a brother and sister, a grandson and granddaughter, a niece and nephew.”

She added that the photo was taken on Thanksgiving, a day when most people are at home spending time with their loved ones. Instead of spending their day with their families, however, the couple decided to go to work to keep their community safe so others could enjoy the holiday.

Amid the negativity surrounding law enforcement throughout the country, Brittany explained that she has received her share of hateful comments and even death threats. She used the opportunity to ask people to remember that officers are human too, and that they put their lives on the line for their communities.

“We are attacked daily and getting killed just for putting on a badge,” she wrote. “You voice your opinion, and rally against law enforcement over tickets!! We are risking our lives.”

Her post quickly went viral, and it was shared thousands of times with thousands more comments applauding both her words and her work.

And she told local news station 12 News that although she still continues to receive harsh comments every once in a while, she is determined to continue helping as many people as she can.

“I got into law enforcement due to my mother [who] was murdered when I was three years old,” she explained. “I always felt a need to help people.”
