Eating Healthier Without Willpower: 3 Great Products For Balancing Your Diet

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

We’d all like to eat a little healthier. Easier said than done—about 90 percent of Americans eat too much sodium, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, and we’re well below our recommended daily allotment of vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and whole grains.

Unfortunately, in between work, exercise, and all-night Netflix binges, we don’t really have the time (or willpower) to build a balanced diet. The good news: Technology has our backs.

If you’re looking to improve your diet, here are a few essential tools to get you started.

1. HelloFresh

Our diet improved substantially when we opened our first HelloFresh box, simply because we stopped eating out. When you receive a sizable package of delicious groceries along with easy-to-follow recipes, you’ll find yourself ordering takeout on a much less frequent basis (if at all).

Of course, that’s not particularly helpful if the food isn’t decent, and that’s where HelloFresh shines. Unlike other meal delivery services, HelloFresh is extraordinarily flexible; users choose from 15 recipes per week. Each meal is healthy, and the dishes are easy and fun to prepare.

For about $10 a serving, it’s not the cheapest service on the market, but it’s a lot cheaper (and healthier) than grabbing a sack of burgers on your way home. Try it here.

2. Greater Goods Food Scale

If you’re watching portions and tracking macros, you need a food scale. The Greater Goods Nourish scale is the best one we’ve found.

Tell the scale what you’re weighing, and it’ll automatically present you with key nutrition facts for that food via a built-in LCD. You can also ignore that function and simply weigh foods—useful if you’re tracking calories elsewhere—and track virtually anything to an accuracy within 0.1 ounces.

We’re most impressed by the price. For less than $40, you can’t really find a better value for your money. Plus, a portion of the proceeds from each purchase goes toward the Global Orphan Project for children in need.

3. Ninja Professional Blender

The USDA recommends 5 to 13 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. For us, that’s not really happening unless the produce in question is both delicious and convenient.

The Ninja blender comes with two single-serve cups, so you can easily make great-tasting smoothies without devoting serious time to clean up. It’s also fairly affordable; at less than $120, it’s comparable to many standalone mixer blenders and significantly more convenient. It’s a pretty noisy blender, but that’s really the only downside. If you’re looking to upgrade your veggie game, this is a great way to get started.

The best advice we’ve got for eating healthier: Automate everything. If you can easily grab a smoothie, track nutritional info, and make a fresh, home-cooked meal without thinking about it, you’ll have a much better chance of staying on top of your goals. That means a healthier body, a clearer mind, and—most importantly—more time for that next TV binge.
