The issue stems from the pit and the flesh of the avocado. People are using very sharp knives to peel the avocado and are digging into their hands. Experts are sending out a warning after seeing a large spike in these injuries.

The condition is so common that it’s actually got a name: “avocado hand.” Emergency Room doctors are seeing so many of these injuries that they felt they needed to name it. What was once seen as a fluke accident is now being seen as a bit of a public health issue that needs to be addressed.

The issue is that the pit seems very hard, but it’s softer than it appears. When a person jams a knife into it, it suddenly goes through the pit, through the soft flesh of the avocado, and into the person’s hand. Depending on how a person is holding the avocado, this can be just a minor cut or something much more serious.

These injuries are popping up in people around the world. Simon Eccles, honorary secretary of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, claims that sees about four patients each week how have injured themselves slicing an avocado.

Experts say it’s important to correctly peel the avocado in a way that will prevent injury. This way, you can enjoy the deliciousness and the health benefits of the fruit without slicing into your hand.

The first thing you’ll want to do is find a knife that is appropriate for cutting an avocado. That knife should be large enough to reach the seed, so a paring knife is not good for this fruit.

Once you’ve found your knife, cut the avocado in half vertically. Keep your hand clear of the knife and make sure the blade can’t slip into it Let your avocado rest on the cutting board instead of picking it up. If you have to cut around the pit, that’s fine.

Once it’s cut in half, take a spoon and simply to pry out the pit. The flesh of the avocado is very soft and it should be easy to pry that pit out.

Once you’ve got the pit free, continue spooning out the flesh, separating it from the peel. By using a spoon and taking your time, you should be able to get the flesh free without suffering an injury.
